A pregnant woman was taken to the hospital Friday evening after an unlicensed driver reportedly caused a collision at the intersection of Highway 50 East and Airport Road.

A Nevada Highway Patrol trooper said Belen Estupinan was taken for an examination as a precautionary measure even though injuries appeared to be minor. She was expected to be treated and released at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

The accident occurred when a 1985 Chevrolet van, driven by Carson City resident Teresa Garcia, veered into the left-turn lane of eastbound traffic, slamming into a 1992 Dodge Intrepid, said Trooper Patty Kinard.

"A citation was given to the driver of the van for no driver's license and an illegal left turn," she said.

Both vehicles were severely damaged and had to be towed.

Five children were riding in the Intrepid at the time of the accident. A girl who hit her head against the windshield of the van refused treatment. There were three passengers in the van.
