Letter: Pawlak should have saved his time

This letter, waste of time that it is, is concerning Christopher Lunn's public beratement of Nicholas Pawlak's tirade over the woeful state of our public officials.

Mr. Pawlak should have saved his time, realizing that the admonishment of these "elected servants" is futile. It's like beating a dead horse; it may make you feel better, but it won't get you anywhere. Part of the problem is happy little patriots (brainwashed boobs) like Mr. Lunn who are under the illusion that they are being served by their elected officials. These people actually believe that participation in the process, marginal as it is, will actually lead to positive changes.

This is just a small sampling of the shenanigans that are perpetrated by our commissioners here in Douglas since Mr. Lunn is a resident here, not even going into that bunch of land-grabbing, money-grubbing, tax-happy yahoos they have up in Carson.

Here in Douglas for many years, the county was charging a substantial amount of tax to contractors for new residential construction above what was allowable by law. Two of the larger firms got together and filed a suit and won, temporarily putting an end to the practice.

At the next available opportunity, powers that be put an issue onto a ballot asking the voting public to allow them to raise the new residential housing tax by $500 per unit. The issue was defeated. That should have been the end of the story, but mysteriously in the next year's state Senate session, a bill passed through the senate and was signed into law, empowering Douglas County to raise the new residential housing tax by $600 per unit. If a thing like this doesn't call into question the significance of the power of your vote, I don't know what will.

For your information, I do participate in public debate, not that it's ever going to stop these knuckleheads from doing whatever it is that they've already decided to do. I also vote against any new tax whatever the excuse and against who already is in office. Until people open their eyes and see what is really going on and we change the way people are elected in this country, it is only going to get worse.
