YERINGTON - Lyon County's four justices of the peace want more money and more space.

Lyon County commissioners on Thursday will consider the justices' request for a 20 percent increase in pay.

The justices are paid based on the number of days they work each week. They want the $10,000 base figure raised to $12,000.

Dayton Justice of the Peace Ed Johnson, for example, works five days a week and has a base salary of $50,000. Fernley's Steve Lehman works four days as a justice, so his base salary is $40,000. Mason Valley's Dennis Milligan works three days for $30,000 and Fran White works two days as Smith Valley justice of the peace for $20,000.

With accrued 2 percent annual longevity benefits and county cost-of-living increases, Johnson currently earns $77,802; Lehman, $65,929; Milligan, $44,264; and White, $37,092.

Lehman receives additional compensation as county juvenile master, and White is also Yerington's justice of the peace.

All four justices positions are up for election for six-year terms this fall.

The justices are also recommending that their courtrooms be improved and expanded, with funding to come from county and justice court fees.

Other agenda items include:

- Possible awarding of bid for the construction of the Rose Peak Water Treatment Facility. The board previously authorized the Public Works Department to proceed with the installation of new waterlines and building to serve the Miox Water Treatment System.

- Approval of a state Revolving Loan Fund application for approximately $3

million as approved by Silver Spring's voters on May 23, for construction of the wastewater treatment system. The board will also be asked to approve agreements for previously allocated USDA-Rural Development grant funds totaling $1.2 million.

The Lyon County Commissioners meet in the Courthouse Annex, 31 S. Main Street, Yerington, beginning at 9 a.m. For information call 577-5037 (Dayton/Silver Springs) or 463-6531.
