Nevada will get $1.1 million out of $138.1 million in library support grants issued this week by the federal government.

Beverly Sheppard, acting director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, said the grants promote access to information resources in libraries at every level. In Nevada, the money will go toward preserving more than a half-million photographs dating as far back as the 1860s and to improve services to the visually impaired.

The photo project involves scanning photos so they can be produced and made available on CD-ROM to the state's libraries.

The visual services portion of the money will purchase equipment that expands the types and number of books, magazines and other materials on tape for the visually impaired.
