Two vacant positions in the Carson City School District will be filled from within the district through the internal internship program.

"We're real excited about them," said Mary Pierczynski, associate superintendent over education. "They're both really wonderful."

Laurel Terry, intern counselor at Carson Middle School, was appointed as the new vice principal at Seeliger Elementary at Tuesday's school board meeting.

The board approved Kathy Adair to advance from intern dean of the middle school to take over the position permanently.

Terry also served as a sixth-grade teacher at the middle school and as an intern dean.

"She has excellent rapport with the students and parents," Pierczynski said. "She's a real go-getter."

Pierczynski said Terry is well-suited for her new position as vice principal.

"That's a job where you have to be full of fire," she said. "There's nothing lazy about her."

Adair has served as counselor at Carson Middle School for eight years. She served last semester as intern dean.

"She did a very good job," Pierczynski said. "She understands middle school and middle school kids."

Pierczynski said Adair also has all the qualities needed to fill the new position.

"She's a problem-solver and that's what you have to be," she said. "She really cares about the students."

The district's intern program takes employees and allows them to intern in administrative positions.

Seeliger Principal Mike Watty said he thinks the program is effective.

"I'm really happy with the process," he said. "We're promoting from within."

He said he was particularly pleased with the selection of Terry as the vice principal.

"Her diverse background and her strength in educational leadership put her over the top," Watty said. "She's an all-around outstanding educator."

Terry, Adair were all out of town and were not able to attend the meeting.
