Obituary: Donald Hughes

A memorial service for Donald "D.K." Hughes, USN Retired, 62, a Dayton resident since 1987, will be at 1 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Carson City.

Mr. Hughes died April 19, 2000, in Caldwell, Idaho. He was born Jan. 9, 1938, in Decatur, Ill., to Everett E. and Carrie Elizabeth Vaughn Hughes. He was preceded in death by his father, Everett.

Prior to living in Dayton he resided in Barbers Point Naval Air Station, Hawaii, where he was stationed.

Mr. Hughes was a member of the Fleet Reserve.

He was a history buff, loved bird watching and enjoyed woodworking.

Mr. Hughes was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Carson City, very active in church activities and was a Stephen Minister.

Mr. Hughes served in the U.S. Navy for 30 years. He retired in July 1989 as a Senior Master Chief. He served two tours in Vietnam and was on staff of CINCPAC (Commander in Chief Pacific).

Among his survivors are his wife Ruth Hughes of Dayton; sons Kevin Hughes of Phoenix, Ariz. and Russell Hughes of Dallas; mother Carrie "Betty" Hughes of Decatur; brothers Dick Hughes of Decatur, Jim Hughes of Charleston, S.C. and E.G. Hughes of Carbondale, Ill.; sister Sue Lichtenberger of San Diego, and one granddaughter.

Cremation is under the direction of FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Carson City is in charge of arrangements.
