Obituary: Elmer G. Melzer

A memorial service for Elmer G. Melzer, 78, a Carson City resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at FitzHenry's Funeral Home in Gardnerville with the Rev. Elmer Thyr presiding.

Mr. Melzer died May 30, 2000, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital. He was born May 9, 1922, in Chicago to Gottfried J. and Anna Frank Melzer.

He married Lorraine Ploetz of Aurora, Ill.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1945, Mr. Melzer became a journeyman meat cutter, then entered the electrical and electronic industries, working for Texas Instruments and in Southern California for Phaostron Company and Hanson-Hawk Company and finally as a manufacturing engineer for Micom in Canoga Park, Calif.

He loved gardening and woodworking and improving each of his homes.

Mr. Melzer was a lifelong Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Richardson, Texas and a charter member of Shepherd of the Sierra Lutheran Church in Douglas County.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and joined the Submarine Services, serving on the U.S.S. Gar in the South Pacific and on Midway Island.

Among his survivors are his wife of 57 years Lorraine of Carson City; daughter Kristine Melzer of Carson City; sons David and wife Terry of Minden, Michael of Palmdale and James and wife, Darla, of of Port Angeles, Wash.; sister, Marcella Ernsting of Montello, Wis. three granddaughters and one great-grandson.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.

FitzHenry's Funeral Home, Gardnerville, is in charge of arrangements.
