Obituary: Helen Pozzi

A celebration of life for Helen Mechelsen Child Pozzi, a long-time Lakewood, Wash. resident, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Mary's Church in Lakewood.

Mrs. Pozzi died Feb. 26, 2000, at St. Peter's Hospital in Olympia, Wash. She was born July 24, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minn.

She graduated from the University of Washington in 1941 where she was a member of the Alpha Phi sorority. While she attended college in Seattle, she was president of the Associated Women's Students.

She married Gerald F. Child in November 1942. He died in 1990, and she married Archie Pozzi of Carson City in February 1992.

Mrs. Pozzi was a member and past president of both the Tacoma Junior League and the Tacoma Garden Club and a member of the Aloha Club. She was a past board member of the Tacoma Art Museum and had been an active member of St. Mary's Church since its inception. She was one of the individuals who oversaw the design and construction of the Tacoma Native Garden at Point Defiance Park and she was a founding member of the Lakewold Garden Foundation and a long-time member of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Harlan Mechelsen.

Among her survivors are her husband, Archie, children, Julie Ferro, of Tualatin, Ore., and Maralyn Ditlevson and Gerry Child, both of Olympia, Wash.; five grandchildren; five stepchildren and four step-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Lakewold Foundation, St. Mary's Church, Lakewood or the Native Garden Foundation Fund.

Mountain View Funeral Home, Tacoma, is in charge of arrangements.
