Regent Derby named to humanities committee

Regent Jill Derby of Douglas County has been named to the Nevada Humanities Committee.

Derby, who chairs the board, is in her second term on the Board of Regents.

She was one of 10 new members from around the state, including former Public Service Commissioner and Lieutenant Governor's candidate Rose McKinney James.

There are 21 committee members. It is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities and works in partnership with local communities to develop and fund public humanities programs in Nevada.

It awards grants to local nonprofit groups to create programs ranging from lectures to exhibits, performances and publications and school programs for children. The committee also develops its own public programs such as the Great Basin Book Festival and Humanities on the Road speakers bureau.

The other new members of the committee are Heather Allen, Ruth Hanusa, Raynaldo Martinez and John Smith of Las Vegas; Steve Nightingale, LaVerne Jeanne and Nancy Cashell of Reno; and Tonia Harvey of Baker.

Current members of the committee are Barbara Cloud of Henderson, Nancy Remington of Elko, Philip Boardman of Reno, Walter Cuchine of Eureka, Barbara Ferguson of McDermitt, Christopher Hudgins, Steve Morris, Don Smith and Angie Wallin of Las Vegas, Marilyn Melton and N. Edd Miller of Reno.
