There will be no races for Carson City's school board seats this year.

Loretta Evenson, who filed for the District 2 seat against incumbent Douglas Ponn, has withdrawn to avoid a possible conflict of interest.

"At the time I applied, I didn't think there would be a conflict," Evenson said. "The more I thought I about it, I decided against it."

Evenson is a 20-year employee of Allison MacKenzie Hartman Soumbeniotis and Russell, the law firm that represents the school district.

She is a legal assistant but does not work with Todd Russell, the district's attorney.

Still, she said, she would not feel comfortable serving in both capacities and withdrew from the race.

"I hated to do it," she said. "Any slight chance of a conflict is not a good thing to get involved in."

Evenson has served nine years on the Parent-Teacher Association and is a board manager on the state PTA.

"I thought I could really make a difference," she said.

Although she will not run this year, she said she has not ruled out the possibility in the future.

"Maybe in four or five years, things could change," she said. "It is a position that I would love to have someday."

She said the district is still in good hands.

"I think Doug Ponn will do a terrific job," she said.

Ponn was appointed to the school board March 28 to fill the seat left vacant when Julie Butler resigned on Feb. 17.

Incumbent John McKenna is running for the district 5 seat and JoAnna Wilson is running for district 7.

The candidates will skip the primary election and go straight to the general election on Nov. 7.
