SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Pam Williams and Alyson Thurman have obviously been offensive forces in each of their four seasons as starters for the Carson High School girls basketball team. On Saturday afternoon, the dynamic duo was downright dominant on the defensive side while leading the Senators to a 53-23 Northern 4A Division II victory against South Tahoe.
The game was decided in the first quarter when Williams and Thurman combined to score 18 points as Carson stormed to a 20-3 lead. Many of those points were a direct result of a zone press spearheaded by the 6-foot Thurman and 5-11 Williams trapping on top.
"With their experience, they do a good job," Carson coach Paul Croghan said. "When you have two 6-footers trapping, and they do it right, that's a very effective defense."
Williams finished the contest with 14 points, 12 of which came in the first period. Thurman scored eight of her 13 points in the first.
Jennifer Saunders also contributed 10 points during a game in which nine players scored for the Senators."Everybody played well, all 12 of them," Croghan said. "Jen had her varsity career high, Talia Joyce came in and did a good job running the offense and Terry Niederer had five or six rebounds. It was good to see that."
Lindsay Hitt led South Tahoe with six points, all of which came in the fourth quarter. Amy Carter's 3-pointer accounted for the Vikings' offensive output in the first quarter.
Carson is now 6-2 in division, 21-4 overall coming into its game on Tuesday against Hug in Reno.
