The Dayton boys basketball team lost its first game of the year to Northern 4A power Hug 71-48 on Thursday at the Rail City Classic. Hug, which was coming off a win over Elko, improved to 11-0, while the Dust Devils fell to 7-1.

Dayton opened the tournament with a 55-44 win over Spanish Springs on Wednesday.

The Dust Devils were done in by the second quarter against Hug in which they were outscored 23-8.

"There's a reason why they're 11-0," Dayton coach Rob Streeter said. "We played three really good quarters.

"Their up tempo style and pressure kind of got to us in the second quarter. Three of the four quarters, we were right there with them."

Jake Deen had 24 points and 10 rebounds for Dayton.

Against Spanish Springs, the Dust Devils cruised to the win after leading 28-12 at halftime. Deen scored 18 points and Brian Lahmann added 16 points.

"We're happier with the way we played with the loss than with the win," Streeter said.

Dayton will play Rite of Passage at 6 p.m. today at Spanish Springs.
