Obituary: Herman H. Herbig

A service for Herman H. Herbig, 81, a Minden resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Gardnerville.

Mr. Herbig died Aug. 19, 2002, in Carson City. He was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Hankensbuttel, Germany, to Herman and Anna Herbig.

The family came to Carson Valley in March 1938 and lived for a time with the Neddenriep family in Alpine County.

He attended Minden Grammar School at age 17 to master English and continued his education as a student and graduate of Douglas County High School in Gardnerville.

He was very proud to become a citizen of the United States.

He lived with his parents at their Centerville Lane farm until 1946 when they purchased and moved to the ranch on Muller Lane, living there until his death.

Mr. Herbig married Anneliese Schulz in Wittingen, Germany. They continued their ranching operation after the death of his parents. Upon retirement, they traveled throughout the world, visiting Russia, South America and Europe.

On Sept. 15, 2000, the Herbigs celebrated 50 years of marriage with relatives in Germany. Their renewal of vows was held in the same church and the celebration was held in the same village as it was 50 years earlier.

The Herbigs recently donated property at Highway 395 and Waterloo Lane to Douglas County for the now completed skate park and additional property for use as a recreational park.

Mr. Herbig was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, past member of the Carson Valley 20-30 Club, Alpine Reservoir Co., Douglas County Farm Bureau, Carson Valley Soil Conservation and the Carson Valley Historical Society. In 1963, he received a Certificate of Merit from the U.S. Soil Conservation Service.

Among his survivors are his wife of 52 years Anneliese of Minden; sons Herman G. of Minden; son and daughter-in-law Ralph and Tamara of Gardnerville and grandson Christian of Carson City.

Burial will be in the family plot in the Genoa Cemetery.
