Final 2002 deadline for turkey hunters

Bird hunters are reminded that spring wild turkey hunt regulations and application forms are now available at all Nevada Division of Wildlife (NDOW) offices and also on the NDOW website at www.nevadadivisionofwildlife.org.


Jan. 25 is the final deadline for receiving applications for the 2002 Nevada spring wild turkey hunts to be held on public lands.


They must be mailed to the Wildlife Administrative Services Office, P.O. Box 1345, Fallon, 89407-1345, by no later than 5 p.m. on that date.


Those turkey tag applications must be received through an authorized mail service such as the U.S. Mail, FedEx, U.P.S.


-- There will be a total of 100 public lands, spring, wild turkey tags available this year.


Those public lands hunts will be held at the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area (MVWMA) in Lyon County near Yerington, the Moapa Valley Area of Clark County in Southern Nevada, in Lincoln County in Southern Nevada and the Lahontan State Recreational Area LSRA) in Churchill and Lyon Counties.


The 2002 public lands dates are:


Mar. 30-Apr. 5: MVWMA.


Apr. 6-Apr. 12: MVWMA.


Apr. 6-May 5: LSRA.


Apr. 6-May 5: Lincoln County.


Apr. 13-Apr. 19: MVWMA.


Apr. 13-Apr. 19: Moapa Valley.


Apr. 20-Apr. 26: MVWMA.


Apr. 20-Apr. 26: Moapa Valley.


Apr. 27-May 5: MVWMA.


Apr. 27-May 5: Moapa Valley.


-- In addition to the 100 public lands tags, there will be an unlimited number of "private lands" tags available for both resident and non-resident hunters.


The deadline for applications for the Private Lands Spring Turkey Hunt is 5 p.m. on Mar. 8.


Hunters interested in obtaining a Private Lands Spring Turkey hunting tag must first secure a permission authorization/application form from a landowner. The form then must be submitted to the Nevada Division of Wildlife with the tag application and fees.


The 2002 private lands dates are:


Apr. 6-May 5: Lyon County, except for the MVWMA and the LSRA.


Apr. 6-May 5: Paradise Valley in Humboldt County.


Apr. 6-May 5: Lahontan Valley in Churchill County.


Apr. 6-May 5: Humboldt River Valley in Eureka County.


Trespass or guiding fees may be charged by those landowners.


-- The fee for a resident turkey tag is $20. The fee for a non-resident is $50. There is also a non-refundable processing fee of $10.


In addition, a hunter must have a current hunting license for 2001 to apply for a turkey tag, and must also purchase next year's license, for 2002, to hunt during the spring season.


Residents and non-residents are only allowed one turkey tag per year of any type.


The Nevada 2002 Spring Turkey Seasons brochures are available at all NDOW offices and hunting and fishing license outlets throughout the state.
