DAYTON -- A former Dayton High School coach accused of having sex with a student asked to delay his arraignment Thursday because of a scheduling conflict.

Defense attorney Lane Mills asked for a continuance for Desi Navarro, 26, because Navarro's attorney, Ken Ward, was unavailable.

"Mr. Navarro, obviously these are very serious charges and we want you to be represented by counsel," said Judge William Rogers when granting a one-week delay.

The complaint against Navarro alleges he had sex with the 16-year-old student in her bedroom and twice in a vehicle -- once at Dayton Valley Country Club and once at Sutro Elementary School.

He is charged with three felony counts of sexual conduct between school employees and pupils and will appear in court Wednesday for arraignment and a bail hearing at 3:30 p.m.

Navarro, a 1995 Carson High School graduate, coached varsity basketball for two years in Dayton and served as the school's computer technician for one year.

After an internal investigation into the allegations, school officials placed Navarro on administrative leave. He submitted a letter of resignation but it was denied and he was fired, according to Lyon County superintendent Nat Lommori.

Each charge carries a one- to five-year prison sentence.
