Trent, Sipko winners at Lunar Lunacy

Recovery from the Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run is often a lengthy process. However, John Trent of Reno looked just fine last Saturday night when he ran to first-place in the Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department's Lunar Lunacy Fun Run.

Trent, 39, cruised to victory in the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) twilight race held on the streets of Gardnerville and Minden. Trent ran 39 minutes, 2 seconds on a course that started and finished at Lampe Park.

It probably seemed like an ordinary stroll through the park for Trent, who finished 20th overall in a field of 255 finishers at the prestigious Western States 100-miler from Squaw Valley to Auburn, Calif., on June 29. His time for the race was 20 hours, 15 minutes, 21 seconds.

"I ran for the first time (since the 100 miles) Wednesday of last week. It was kind of ugly and I thought, uh oh," Trent said. "But this went surprisingly easy. I like the homes and the feeling of the neighborhood. I needed to do that stuff to get my mind off my sore feet."

Dan Sipko, who ran cross country and track for Douglas High School this past year, was the overall winner of the 5-K race in a time of 20:56.

Staci Baker of South Lake Tahoe was the first woman and second overall finisher in 24:20, just a step ahead of 10-year-old Sara Mangiaracina of Minden in 24:21. Mangiaracina runs competitively for the Reno-based Silver State Striders and has twice qualified for the Junior Olympic national age group cross country championships.

Ric Conti of Fredricksburg was second to the finish line in the 10-K. Neal Chappell was first in the 60-and-over category in a time of 42:57.

Jackie Taylor of Stateline was the first woman and the third overall finisher in 43:47. It was just preparation for the San Francisco Marathon on July 28.

Other Lunar Lunacy 10-K finishers included Bruce Beamer (48:01), Andrea Vaughn (56:17), Ronald Burke (1:05:50) and Ron Cauley (1:06:27).

Other 5-K finishers were Maghan Emerson (26:38), Crystal Honyumptewa (27:45), Kathy Beamer (27:06), Debbie Cutshaw (31:10) and Al Maner (31:18).
