The Carson River Advisory Committee is looking for nominees for the Carson River Awards, given to individuals, businesses or groups who have benefited the river with their volunteer efforts.

The committee "likes to be able to acknowledge individuals who have done more than go down and look at it," said Carson park planner Vern Krahn. "People have really grabbed onto the river as an environmental resource. The kind of support of the river and interest (in it) is a grassroots kind of thing."

While nominations are due Friday, Krahn said the parks department has received few although plenty of people help along the river each year.

Groups or individuals can be nominated in three categories:

-- Stewardship -- an individual, business or property owner who worked to improve river habitat.

-- Education -- agency or school teacher who promotes river education

-- Friend -- an individual or group that may patrol the corridor, inventory resources or clean up litter.

Volunteer efforts must have been directed along the Carson City boundaries of the river. Applications are due Friday. They are available via fax or at the Park and Recreation Department, 3303 Butti Way, Suite 9. Call 887-2363, ext. 1006 for information.
