Tahoe Truckee High School senior Ryan Christensen won't be in class on Tuesday, but rather manning the polls at the Northwoods Clubhouse in Tahoe Donner.
Christensen, who is one of the few 18-year-old high school students eligible to vote in this year's General Election, thought volunteering his time as a poll worker would be a meaningful way to celebrate his first trip to the voting booth.
"My teacher said they were looking for help and it just seemed like a fun way to get involved," Christensen said, even thought it means he has to be at the polls at 6:15 a.m.
For Christensen, concerns about the state of the economy, unemployment and hiring freezes will play a role in how he votes.
"Of course, you also look for people that share similar views as yours," Christensen added.
When asked if he thought today's youth are somewhat apathetic about voting, Christensen disagreed.
"I really don't think that's true," he said. "I haven't seen that attitude. Every vote counts and it's important for people to voice their opinions."
On a visit to several classrooms last week, some students said they were unaware of the deadline to register -- even unaware of the election. Others said they had wanted to vote this year but had missed the deadline.
Regardless, Christensen said he is looking forward to Tuesday.
"I think it will be fun," he said. "It seems like the adult thing to do. It's make me feel like I'm not a child anymore -- like I'm more independent."
