Student volunteers assembled 170 baskets for children and their families in need in the Carson City School District.

"The wonderful fruit baskets are filled with pears, oranges, assorted apples, bananas and grapes and topped with treats," said Kim Riggs, the school homeless advocate.

Riggs said the project would have been impossible without the help of local grocery stores, including Albertson's, Grocery Outlet, Scolari's, Safeway and Super K-Mart.

Each store donated three to four boxes of produce for the baskets.

"I estimate that 680 people will benefit from their generosity," Riggs said. "Without them, the program would not even exist."

This was the fifth year the volunteers have distributed the baskets.
