I was actually rooting for the Williams sisters during their semifinal matches on Friday at the U.S. Open. Thankfully they both won, which must keep happening if the rumors of Serena and Venus wanting to play with the men will ever come true.
It would be more of a challenge, the sisters said. John McEnroe said they wouldn't even be in the top 100 in the world. I'd say they wouldn't be in the top 100 at the Seattle Athletic Club. Think about it... instead of three-match sets with girls, they would play five-match sets against men who serve over 120 mph serves for three-straight hours. Please, somebody make it happen. Then maybe Serena and Venus will disappear. More importantly, maybe their dad will disappear.

The United States makes the quarterfinals of the World Cup this summer and Argentina doesn't even make the second round. On Wednesday, Argentina beats the U.S. in basketball, then Yugoslavia knocks us out of the World Basketball Championships on Thursday. Canada won the gold medal in hockey. The Euros will probably win the Ryder Cup. Is something wrong here? What's next? The Barcelona Dragons beating the St. Louis Rams.

Montreal drew only 2,134 fans in Thursday's 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies, the smallest crowd in the 25-year history of Olympic Stadium. If you exclude the hot dog vendors, janitors, both teams and both teams' groupies and include the Canadian exchange rate, the actual attendance was more like 216, a number even the University of Nevada rifle team wouldn't be proud of. Do the Expos even have groupies?

Reno center David Padgett is listed by ESPN.com as the No. 2 center in the nation and the fifth best prospect overall. It's been said that his final college choices are Kansas, Stanford, Arizona and North Carolina. But I've been told that Padgett wants to go to Kansas. But his father, Pete, wants him at Stanford. David, who will become the first Nevada high schooler to play in the prestigious McDonald's All-American game, will probably be a Jayhawk.

If Alex Rodriguez is an MVP candidate, then so is the Detroit Tigers' Randall Sims. Like A-Rod, Sims leads his team in batting average, RBIs and home runs. And like A-Rod, Sims is the best player on a last place team.

The United States soccer team was ranked in the top 10 of the FIFA World rankings for the first time ever last month. The U.S. was tied in for ninth with Italy. Does anybody care? Better yet, does anybody know when, who, why, how, or what FIFA is?

How would you like to be the Oakland Athletics? The whole country adores you because you just set an American League record by winning 20 consecutive games, yet you only hold a three-game lead in your division.

Moreover, how would you like to be Carolina Panthers quarterback Chris Weinke? You go from being a starter on a 1-15 in your rookie year, then are benched for Sunday's season opener because your coach, John Fox, thinks 36-year-old Rodney Peete is more familiar with the system. With that reasoning, Peete could be the starter for the Detroit Lions, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders, all teams Peete has played for in his 14-year career. Peete hasn't even started a game in four years and was allowed to nothing more than wear a headset like that of a Burger King employee the last three years with Oakland.
