Utility given go-ahead to pursue purchase of building

DAYTON -- In an effort to meet expanding space needs caused by the area's growing population, Dayton Utilities is trying to buy its current office site.

After reviewing various alternatives presented by Public Works Director Chuck Swanson, Lyon County commissioners last week unanimously agreed the purchase of what was formerly known as the Thiel-Winchell Building, 41 Lakes Blvd., is better than continuing to rent office space at the site or building a new facility.

Commissioner LeRoy Goodman said, "Buying is the best way to go. It makes sense to do this. Down the road we will need more room."

Commissioner David Fulstone said the utility's buying the building, and not as a joint effort with the county, would avoid possible future conflicts.

Swanson said purchase of the 6,400-square-foot building will cost $293,000. The approximately 3,900 square feet not currently needed by the utilities could be rented or leased to outside parties at market value.

Swanson also indicated some of the space could be used by other county entities housed in the crowded Bluestone Building and former utility building in central Dayton. The purchase price is included within the current utility rate structure and will not affect customer fees.

Alternatives to the purchase included:

-- Continue renting the current office space at a cost of 95-cents per square foot per month.

-- Construct office space near Highway 50 East and Pine Cone (near Smith's) at a cost of $470,000.
