Carson tennis teams sweep Wooster

Carson High's first win of the season in girls tennis amounted to essentially another day of practice.

Wooster had only three players, so the Senators rolled to a 22.5-0 win on Thursday at Centennial Park. But the match did give Carson coach Diane Baker a chance to play some of her younger players.

In singles, Amber Whitworth and Simone Kuckenmeister both won 6-0 while Beth Ware won 6-1. In doubles, Ila Bottoms and Courtney Blankenship and Hannah Lang and Bottoms won 6-1 while Rachel Kuhn and Lang won 6-2.

"The younger ones got to play, which is good," Baker said. "I saw what they can do, I saw them in a match."

It figures that Carson should have no trouble with Hug on Tuesday before a key match with rival Douglas this Thursday.

"We're really looking forward to Douglas and hoping to give them a run for their money," Baker said.

CARSON BOYS 18, WOOSTER 4.5

Carson swept all nine singles matches, with No. 1 Josh Brekken, No. 2 Nick Weeks and No. 3 Dylan Stone winning three matches each in the Carson boys tennis team's rout of Wooster.

The highlight came when Stone overcame a 2-5 deficit to beat Wooster's No. 1 player 7-5.

John McDonald and Ed Jaquette also swept three matches at No. 1 doubles. John Whitworth and Brandon Waterman nearly pulled off a sweep in doubles, but fell to Wooster's No. 1 team in a tiebreaker.

"They played well," said Carson coach Pat Houlihan about Whitworth and Waterman. "They kept the ball in play."

Zach Caron and Tim Suchland won 6-2 in doubles for Carson. "Everyone played well," Houlihan said.
