Carson baseball wins in Hawaii again

The Carson High baseball team made it two in a row in Hawaii with an 8-2 win over Maryknoll Catholic on Thursday.


Jake Rasner struck out eight over four innings for the win and Brad Breeden and Jesse Rasner both homered for the Senators (22-5).


"I was real pleased overall with the team's performance," Carson coach Ron McNutt said.


Owen Brolsma also returned to the lineup from a groin injury for the first time in almost two weeks and had two RBI. Brolsma caught four innings before giving way to Tony Teixeira.


Carson took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Aaron Henry doubled and eventually scored. In the second, Eric Melendez doubled to start a two-run rally. Jesse Rasner followed with an RBI sacrifice fly and Toni Masini hit an RBI single to make it 3-0.


Breeden hit a solo home run in the third and in the fourth, Melendez singled and Jesse Rasner followed with a two-run shot to make it 6-0.


In the fifth, Henry walked, stole second and eventually scored on Brolsma's sacrifice fly to make it 7-1. Jesse Rasner walked and eventually scored to make it 8-1 in the seventh.


Jake Rasner was touched for one run in the fourth while Zach Caron pitched two scoreless innings. Jared Wulff finished up in the seventh. Neil Holmes went 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI, Melendez went 2-for-3 and Teixeira was 1-for-1.


Carson finishes its three-game series in Hawaii today against Castle. McNutt said Scott DeFriez would start and that he planned to also use Mike Handley and Jason Alcasas on the mound. In addition, McNutt said he planned to have Brolsma catch another four innings today.
