CONVICT LAKE, CALIF: Dave DeSurra of the Convict Lake Resort (800) 992-2260 reported: "One of the best opening days ever. Over 230 rainbow trout were weighed in and captured on film at the store. More than 180 of the trout were over 2 pounds. Many limits, many happy fishermen. The top fish was a 11.10 pound Alpers Trophy Rainbow trout caught by Chris Coston of Placentia, Calif. It was taken on 2-pound test line and no net! He was float tubing near the inlet and using a Chartreuse with gravy color Crave. Other big trout were a 5.84 pound Alpers on an inflated nightcrawler from the jetty, a 5.57 Alpers with a Trout Teaser at the Inlet, a 5.54 on rainbow Power Bait from the north shore and a 5.19 with rainbow Power Bait from the jetty.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post in Chilcoot (530-9933-3683) reported that fishing has slowed down a bit due to the weather, but those who have come out are getting some nice fish. Three anglers limited out at Lunker Point with rainbow Power Bait and worms. Fly fishing is good one day and slow the next. Water is still cold and the fish are not feeding a lot. Chilcoot, Frenchman's and Spring Creek Campgrounds are now open.

ROOSEVELT-LANE LAKES, CALIF: Both lakes were ice free with very little snow on the trail. Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City hiked on Opening Day. They reported very cold and very windy conditions, with very few fishermen. There were only four float tubes and four other shore fisherman at both lakes. The Quilici's caught and released more than a dozen, small Eastern brook trout. No cutthroat trout were caught. They were casting various colors of TOR-P-DO lures.




SACRAMENTO RIVER. CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding (800-670-4448) said:


Redding to Anderson: Flows at 14,000 C.F.S. Rainbow trout fishing is fair with the rain and winds, fishing is a little more challenging.


Using spinning gear with Glo-Bugs, crickets and Flatfish lures. Fly fishing with Nymphs, PT Nos. 14 & 16, olive and brown. Watch for fishing to pick up as this storm passes. Temps expected to be in the 70's later this week.




SILVER LAKE, CALIF: No report.




SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero said water is clear. Fishing for rainbow trout and landlocked kings is turning up, as warm weather has arrived. Fishing will continue to improve. Hooking a few Browns in the McCloud Arm. You'll have to bring rain gear, as they are calling for showers the next few days. Using downriggers with Rapala and Rebel lures. Watch for fishing to improve as Shad appear in large schools.




SPARKS MARINA (in Sparks): No report.




SPOONER LAKE, NEV: No report.




SQUAW CREEK RESERVOIR (north of Gerlach in Washoe County): No report.

LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:


Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "The fishing has been very good for average-sized Mackinaw trout, early in the morning, when we can get out between storms.


Some of the larger Macks are going up to 7-8 pounds. I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones.


We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach.


We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."




LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:


Gene St. Denis of Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said, "When I can get out, the Mackinaw fishing remains excellent at Dollar Point, Cal-Neva Point and Carnelian Bay.


We've been trolling 200-280 feet deep with large, silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.


The Macks are running 3-7 pounds. The bigger ones have been up to 10 pounds.




LAKE TAHOE -- South Shore: No report.




LAKE TAHOE -- East Shore: Gene St. Denis said: "The usual report. When the weather lets you get out on the lake, we are catching Macks in the 2-5 pound class on the Cave Rock Shelf.


We have been trolling 180-260 feet deep with silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.


Jigging has also been successful with white, Crippled Herring jigs, tipped with a live minnow."




TOPAZ LAKE: The John Riordan Annual Invitational Fishing Derby was held on Monday and Tuesday, with the derby headquartered at the Topaz Marina and Topaz Lodge. The weather was windy and cold, on those days, but those fishermen, who ventured out, caught fish. Mostly, shore fishing with various types of baits and lures.

Upper Twin Lake: Annett's Mono Village ((760) 932-7468) reported great fishing for Opening Day. A 5-pound, 8-ounce rainbow on Blue Mango Turbo Dough. A 4-pounder on a nightcrawler from shore. A 3-pound, 8-ounce rainbow on a red/gold Thomas Buoyant lure. Stringers coming in on Thomas Buoyants, nightcrawlers and Power Bait.




VIRGINIA LAKES, CALIF. AREA: No report.




VIRGINIA LAKE IN RENO: Recently planted with 783 rainbow trout, 9.5 inches.




WALKER LAKE, NEV: Norm Budden and Bob "Slick" McCulloch of Carson City caught 4 small cuthroat while trolling north of Sportsman's Beach with Apex lures.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Dennis Dunn of the Wild Horse Resort (775-758-6472) reported: "It tried to snow this morning. It's off and on sunshine right now (Monday). Kathy Cushman of Sonoma, Calif. caught a 10.8 pound (30 inches) German brown trout. She was trolling a green Mzuri lure in about 5 feet of water.


Anthony Headley of Las Vegas caught and released more than 100 trout. He kept five that were over 20 inches. He was using flies, lures and bait from shore."
