Costella places seventh in 400 I.M.

Carson High Lauren Costella had another outstanding effort, making the 400-meter individual medley finals at the World University Games in Korea.


Costella, who swims for the Carson Tigersharks, followed up her fifth place finish in the 800 freestyle by taking seventh in the 400 I.M. on Thursday. Costella, who will be a freshman at Stanford University, qualified for the finals by placing third in her heat in four minutes, 54.80 seconds.


Ukraine's Yana Klochkova won the heat in 4:48.65 and Great Britain's Rebecca Cooke, who won the gold in the 800 free, placed second in 4:53.31.


In the finals, Klochkova won in 4:45.01, Maiko Fujino of Japan took second in 4:48.44 and Cooke was third in 4:48.59. Costella placed seventh in 4:54.24. Also for the United States, Adrienne Binder took fifth in 4:52.56.


Costella will have one more chance to win a medal when she swims in her best event -- the 1,500 free -- on Saturday.
