Carson boys hoops pick up first victory

The Carson High boys basketball team went from one end of the spectrum to the other in less than 24 hours.

One night after losing to Woodside, Calif., 74-31 on Thursday in the first round of the Riordan High Crusader Classic in San Francisco, the Senators rebounded strong with a 57-42 win over Mission, Calif., on Friday. "We played with a lot more energy," Carson coach Bruce Barnes said.

In Woodside, Carson faced a team that's expected to be one of the top clubs in the Central Coastal Section. Woodside started strong against the Senators, hitting six three-pointers in the first quarter on its way to hitting 9-of-16 threes for the game.

Woodside also shot above 50 percent from the floor for the game while the Senators were just 9-of-45.

Carson still struggled somewhat from the floor against Mission. "We're still not shooting the ball very well," Barnes said.

But the Senators were still able to take control against Mission, taking a 15-7 lead after one quarter. Jason Alcasas had 13 points and 12 rebounds, Rory Wunsch scored 13 points and Brian Welch added 10 points for Carson.

Barnes said another key to the win was the play of point guard Jeff Hurzel, who had no turnovers.

Against Woodside, Kyle Bacon scored six points and Hurzel added five points. Carson will finish play in the tournament with a 3 p.m. game today.

LONE PEAK 64, GALENA 56

Lone Peak, Utah, went on a 23-0 run to break the game open against the Galena boys basketball team. Lone Peak advanced to Utah's Final Four last season and was coming off a win over Timpview, which was ranked No. 1 in Utah by the Salt Lake Tribune.

Lone Peak used its 23-0 run to take a 55-32 lead after three quarters. "A loss of character," said Galena coach Tom Maurer in explaining his team's struggles. "We just flat out took bad shots, turned the ball over and forgot to play the defense we exhibited in the first half."

Galena had been tied with Lone Peak 32-32 early in the third quarter. "I think we did a pretty good job up to that point," Maurer said.

Derek Lorenzen continued his outstanding play for Galena, scoring 29 points. Iain Hill also scored eight points and did an outstanding job on the boards. "I thought Iain played an excellent game," Maurer said.

Galena continues its tough schedule when it travels today to meet St. Francis in the Bay Area.
