SALT LAKE CITY - The man police believe knows the whereabouts of Bertha Anguiano will appear in a Salt Lake Court in January on charges he aimed a gun at Salt Lake officers.
Utah District Court Judge Glen Iwosaki ordered Israel "Juan Carlos" Tellez, 36, to appear Jan. 6 for a hearing to determine if enough evidence exists to try him on aggravated assault and weapons charges, said Kent Morgan, Salt Lake County deputy district attorney.
Tellez allegedly pulled a weapon from his waistband Nov. 21 and pointed it at officers when was approached in the parking lot of a Salt Lake apartment complex as he repaired a flat tire on his 1992 GMC Jimmy, said Kent Morgan, Salt Lake assistant chief district attorney. He was wanted for questioning in Anguiano's disappearance.
Police say the truck matches the description of a vehicle given by Anguiano's 3-year-old son who was found Nov. 10 bloodied and abandoned at a Dayton grocery store. He told police Tellez hit his mother with a stick or shovel and she is dead.
The married mother of three was last seen 90 minutes prior to the discovery of her 3-year-old talking with a man in the parking lot of Empire Elementary School where she'd dropped off her 6-year-old son for school.
Investigators believe Tellez and Anguiano may have been engaged in an extramarital affair.
Blood found on the boy's clothing matches that of a female relative, an affidavit to search the truck revealed.
Carson City investigators were in Utah on Monday at Tellez's request, but said he continues to deny his involvement.
Charges against another man arrested with Tellez were dropped.
Tellez remains in jail without bail.
