Much of the work has been accomplished on the support walls being built along Highway 50 south of Cave Rock at Lakeridge, but construction has been suspended for the winter season, Nevada Department of Transportation officials said this week.
"We have no choice because of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (rules), and we're in winter shut down mode," said Scott Magruder, spokesman for the department. "We did some paving and did enough work to get it back to four lanes."
The work, which limited the highway to a single lane each way since last fall, will resume May 1.
The $2.6 million project is needed to support the lakeside of the road, which sits above a number of homes.
The existing walls were old and breaking. Originally, the project was scheduled to be finished by Oct. 15, but rock in the area required drilling and the fix proved to be more challenging than expected, Magruder said.
Similar support wall work will start this spring on a two-mile section of the highway south of Lakeridge.
The construction will begin near Bourne Meadow and run east toward Zephyr Cove, he said. The project, estimated to cost $4.5 million, will include a new drainage system.
