Three deputies were promoted to the rank of sergeant during a short ceremony Tuesday at the Carson City Sheriff's Department.

Jim Primka and Mike Cullen are new patrol sergeants. Daniel Chaney will hold that rank as he works in the jail.

When Sheriff Ken Furlong took office in January, a shuffling of positions opened up the three sergeants slots, beginning with the retirement of Lt. Dwight Demmit, who worked in the jail.

Ken Sandage was appointed to the lieutenant position last week. Earlier, Steve Schuette was appointed to a chief deputy position. Sgt. Jack Freer was named commander of intelligence.

"We've realigned a few folks," Furlong told a crowd of deputies, family and friends that crowded into the briefing room in the old jail. "One of the biggest steps in our career is when we achieve the rank of sergeant."

Also, sheriff's Sgt. Bob White was transferred from patrol to head the detective division.

"Welcome to the changing of the role from supervisor to manager," Furlong told the new sergeants.
