FORT CHURCHILL COOLING PONDS, NEV: According to Steve Tomac of the Nevada Division of Wildlife, the ponds have been pretty good. Using rubber worms and fishing very slow for bass, ranging 10-14 inches. Using liver or worms for catfish, ranging 10-12 inches.


FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683) reported: Most of the ice is gone, still some at the dam. You can drive up the west side to Lunker Point, up the north end and around to the east side to fish at Turkey Point or Crystal Point. Two anglers reported their limits of trout on Feb. 20. Their fish weighed a total of 15 pounds and were caught using worms and rainbow Power Bait. Another angler limited out at Crystal Point using worms and Power Bait.


Fly fishermen using a crystal cinnamon Woolly Bugger fly at Snallygaster caught and released a total of 16 trout in the 15-18 inch range.


FROG LAKE, CALIF. (On the hiking trail into Winnemucca Lake): No report.


GREEN LAKE, CALIF: Closed.


HINKSON SLOUGH, NEV. (On the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area): According to Steve Tomac of the Nevada Division of Wildlife, fishing has been good this past week with small Midge fly patterns working best (in the 16-20 size) with floating line. Some success also with Prince Nymphs. Some people were catching a few of the larger brooder fish but most were catching fish in the 12-inch range.


HOBART RESERVOIR, NEV: Closed until May 1.


HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA, CALIF: Closed.


INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords General Store (530-694-2930) checked in and said it was pretty slow fishing over the weekend. The only noteworthy action was a 5 pound rainbow taken on nightcrawlers by Ed Martinez of Gardnerville. Alpine County will make its first trout plant of the year in several weeks.


Summit Lake (above Indian Creek Reservoir): No report.

NORTH POND, NEV. (On the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area): No report.


PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: On Saturday, Andy Moore of Carson City caught the largest, reported trout of the week: A 12-pound, 13-ounce Lahontan cutthroat trout. It was taken on a broken-back Flatfish lure, while trolling in the area south of "The Nets." The trophy trout had a Tui Chub in its gullet. Moore reported that he and his fishing partner caught a total of 15 trout while trolling at a depth of 16-25 feet.


In addition, Lawrence Quadrio of the Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks (358-6113) reported that shore fishermen did the best with big fish last week. Three Cutts, over 10 pounds, were caught and released by fly fishermen. Also, an unconfirmed report of a 14 pounder taken from shore.

ROOSEVELT-LANE LAKES, CALIF: Closed.


SACRAMENTO RIVER. CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding (800-670-4448) said:


Redding to Anderson: Flows at 10,700 C.F.S. Rainbow trout fishing is tough, up and down. Numbers of fish being caught and released is pretty low -- 88-10 fish per day. Using spinning gear with Glo-Bugs. Fly fishing with Nymphs, PT's, and egg pattern flies.


SILVER LAKE, CALIF: No report.


SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero said water is clear and cold. Bass fishing is fair. Jones Valley and Silverthorn areas. Plastic worms, live minnows and grubs producing 1-3 pound Spotted Bass. Some rainbow trout being caught on the surface using Rapala and Rebel lures.


STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF: No report.


LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:


Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "The fishing remains very good for Mackinaw Trout. Some of the larger Macks are going up to 8-9 pounds. I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."


Gene St. Denis of Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said "The Mackinaw fishing continues to be very good in front of Dollar Point and Cal-Neva Point. We've been trolling 200-280 feet deep with large, silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows. The biggest have been running up to 9 pounds."


LAKE TAHOE -- South Shore: No report.


LAKE TAHOE -- East Shore: Gene St. Denis said: "The fish are smaller than on the North Shore. We are catching Macks in the 2-5 pound class on the Cave Rock Shelf.


We have been trolling 180-260 feet deep with silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.


Jigging has also been successful with white, Crippled Herring jigs, tipped with a live minnow."


TOPAZ LAKE, CALIF. AND NEV.:


Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported: "Great weather, reports of good fishing and the water temp has come up 5 degrees.


We had lots of shore fishermen over the weekend but no reports of any big trout.


The boaters did very well, catching Eagle Lake strain rainbow trout, up to 19 inches.


The best success was with either sliver flasher blades and nightcrawlers or Needelfish lures.


The best fishing was on the south end of the lake, toward the middle, while trolling in a zig-zag pattern."

WALKER LAKE, NEV: Continues to be excellent for good numbers of Lahontan cutthroat trout for boaters and shore fishermen.


Dick Biggs and Wally Hesse of of Carson City reported they caught a total of nine trout while trolling in shallow water on the east side of the lake, last Thursday.


On Sunday, Don and Elaine Quilici of Carson City caught and released a total of 15 trout in 3.5 hours, while spincasting in their chest waders. The hot lure on Sunday was a black/white-dot, No. 2 TOR-P-DO lure.


They reported large numbers of shore anglers, float tubers and boaters trolling close to shore in the area between the Walker River and Sand Point.

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Steve Epling of the Wild Horse Resort (775-758-6472) reported: "It's nice up here. It only got down to 8 degrees last night (Sunday). We have about two feet of hard ice. The fishing has been great for lots of perch and for some rainbow and cuttbow trout. Most of the fishermen are jigging with white jigs and a piece of mealworm. The most productive areas are on the west and north sides of the island in front of the State Park boat ramp. The larger trout are running up to 18 inches and the larger perch are running up to 12 inches.


WINNEMUCCA LAKE, CALIF: No report.
