Junior Capital Classic is underway

The annual Junior Capital Classic eighth grade boys basketball tournament is being held this weekend at Carson Middle School.


The tournament, which began Friday, will conclude on Sunday.


Twelve teams are competing in two pools in the tournament. In one pool are Carson Middle School, Toyon (Valley Springs, Calif.), Camerado Springs (Cameron Park, Calif.), Granite Oaks (Rocklin, Calif.), Reno Jam On It. and Chico, Calif. In the other pool are Eagle Valley, Marina Village (El Dorado Hills, Calif.), O'Brien, Carson Valley, Winnemucca and Bishop. Calif.


Carson and Eagle Eagle Valley split their first two games on Friday. Carson beat Toyon 47-19 and lost to Chico 69-41. Eagle Valley beat Marina Village 48-36 and losing to Winnemucca 45-43.


For Carson, Nick Smallman scored 12 points against Toyon and had eight points against Chico. For Eagle Valley against Marina Village, Bryce Crook scored 17 points and Martin Sosa added 13 points. Christian Volker scored 10 points for Eagle Valley against Winnemucca.


Carson Valley is off to a 2-0 start in the tournament, beating O'Brien 67-48 and Bishop 55-22. Other scores were:


Granite Oaks 67, Camerado 13; Chico 48, Jam On It 46; Winnemucca 57, Bishop 22; Marina Village 76, O'Brien 44; Granite Oaks 89, Toyon 21; Jam On It 40, Camerado 20.


Today's schedule will be: Gym No. 1 -- 9 a.m., Eagle Valley vs. O'Brien; 10:15 a.m., Marina vs. Bishop; 11:30 a.m., Carson Valley vs. Winnemucca; 2 p.m., Toyon vs, Jam On It; 3:15 p.m., Carson vs. Granite Oaks; 4:30 p.m., Chico vs. Camerado.


Gym No. 2 -- 9:30 a.m., Camerado vs. Toyon; 10:45 a.m., Carson vs. Jam On It; noon, Granite Oaks vs. Chico; 2:30 p.m., Bishop vs. O'Brien; 3:45 p.m., Eagle Valley vs. Carson Valley; 5 p.m., Marina vs. Winnemucca.


Sunday's schedule will be: Gym No. 1 -- 8 a.m., Eagle Valley vs. Bishop; 9:15 a.m., Carson vs. Camerado; 10:30 a.m., Marina vs. Carson Valley.


Gym No. 2 -- 8:30 a.m., Jam On It vs. Granite Oaks; 9:45 a.m., O'Brien vs. Winnemucca; 11 a.m., Chico vs. Toyon..


The runners-up in the two pools will play at 1 p.m. Sunday and the championship game between the winners of each pool will be held at 2:15 p.m. Sunday. In last year's finals, Camerado Springs beat Carson for the title.
