Call them the comeback kids.

The Carson 14-year-old all-star baseball team overcame a 7-1 deficit to beat South Tahoe in the State Babe Ruth Tournament on Thursday at Governor's Field.

Carson began its comeback in the fifth inning when Sean Costella in effect executed a rundown play at first with Marcus Adams at third. Adams scored on the play and Costella eventually scored on a wild pitch. Nick Smallman walked, stole second and scored on John Hazeltine's RBI single to cut the deficit to 7-4.

A huge turning point came in the sixth when with runners at second and third and no outs, Josh Caron was able to strike out the side to escape the jam. In the bottom of the sixth, T.J. Hein singled and Adams and Costella walked to load the bases.

Smallman followed with a two-run single. Joe Skates was then the victim of bad luck when he lined out to center field. But Costella scored on a wild pitch and Smallman scored on a balk.

Tony Fagan walked, went on to steal third and scored on a wild pitch to give Carson a 9-7 lead.

Hazeltine, Bryt Lewis and Smallman were among Carson's offensive leaders. Caron pitched a complete game for the win. Carson plays North Valleys at 8 p.m. today at Governor's Field.
