Abby Niehoff continued to lead an impressive effort by the Carson Tigersharks swim club at the Pacific Age Group Swimming Championships in Concord, Calif.
In 11-12 girls, Niehoff qualified eighth in the 200-meter backstroke in two minutes, 43.39 seconds. She came back to post a Far Western qualifying time of 2:42.34 in placing eighth in the finals.
In 17-18 boys, Kiel Costella qualified seventh in 2:31.82. But because he was also swimming the 200 butterfly, Costella was scratched from the finals. In the 200 fly, Costella qualified in 2:25.81 and placed sixth in the finals in a personal best 2:24.09.
Also in the 200 back, Jake Priest finished in 3:05.85 in 11-12 boys, Rebekah Niehoff finished in 2:46.09 in 13-14 girls and Lauren Metcalf finished in 2:50.19 in 15-16 girls. Priest had a personal best 31.02 in the 50 freestyle.
Tigershark coach Jackie Boudreau said she's been impressed that her swimmers have consistently swam faster in finals than preliminaries.
"Our kids come back at night and swim faster," she said. "That's a sign of maturity and experience that these kids are showing."
The meet concludes today.
