A 20-year-old woman died late Friday night after being ejected from a pickup truck on Interstate 80 11 miles east of Fernley.

The Nevada Highway Patrol's preliminary investigation showed the driver, a 17-year-old male, was westbound on Interstate 80 in the right lane when the vehicle drifted off the south road edge and onto the gravel shoulder.

He then over corrected to the left, causing the vehicle to go into a broadside skid. The truck slid off the south road edge and rolled several times, ejecting the female passenger.

The driver was taken to Washoe Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lyon County deputy coroner.

The white Toyota truck had a Utah license plate. Troopers were called at about 11 p.m., but the time of the accident was unknown at press time. The name of the victim was not released pending notification of relatives.

The accident is under investigation by the highway patrol. It was unknown if alcohol was a factor. Seat belts were not in use.
