People who love to get outdoors and enjoy a nice walk are invited to a series of walks taking place in and around Carson City Tuesday mornings through Sept. 9.

Carson residents Anne Macquarie and Penny Fairfield, founding members of the nonprofit group Muscle Powered, Citizens for a Bikeable and Walkable Carson City, organized the summer activity this year as a way to promote fitness and awareness of the area.

"We just wanted to provide an opportunity to Carson City folks to get out and explore their community and their parks and trails," Fairfield said.

The first tour took place Tuesday along the Carson River at Riverview Park and drew nearly a dozen walkers and a few four-legged friends, Fairfield said.

"Both the dogs and the people had smiles and it was really pleasant," she said.

The group sent out fliers to medical offices around the city and left some at the Carson City Library to promote the event. Anyone interested in future walks can simply show up at 8 a.m. for the walk. Walkers are encouraged to bring a good pair of shoes, sunscreen, water, a hat, identification and a walking stick.
