Don't get caught up in the crowds and traffic celebrating the Fourth of July. Instead, bring the family to Virginia City for a good hometown-style Independence Day celebration with a parade, great food and stupendous fireworks.

Festivities begin at noon with a parade down the main street of Virginia City. with patriotic colors, pageantry, unusual characters and various vehicles.

After the parade, foot-stompin' music is performed by the Comstock Cowboys until 9 p.m.

Fill out the day by visiting the wide variety of shops on C Street. At the Gold Hill Hotel, tales of ghostly visitors said to haunt the brick hotel will be told .

Kids can ride the V&T Railroad or tour the museums to learn how people lived during the glory days of the Comstock.

After dark on the lawn of Miners Park, enjoy a fireworks show.
