CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: On March 2, Gary Alvis of South Lake Tahoe caught a 15-pound, 12-ounce Mackinaw trout, while fishing through the ice. His son Shayne put his arm down a 6-inch diameter hole to grab the trophy fish. The ice is reported to be 14-16 inches thick.

FRENCHMAN RESERVOIR, CALIF: Wiggin's Trading Post at Chilcoot, Calif. (530-993-4683) reported: There's been a lot of action this past week.

A 2.5 pounder on a worm and a 3.5 pounder on a "Wiggin's Worm" both near the dam.

A limit of 4 rainbows and 1 brown at Turkey Point.

The road on the east side is still snowy. The west side is muddy but drivable. You can launch a boat from Lunker Point.

FROG LAKE, CALIF. (On the hiking trail into Winnemucca Lake): No report.

GREEN LAKE, CALIF: Closed.

HINKSON SLOUGH, NEV. (On the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area): Was recently planted with 1,001 rainbow trout, 9 inches in length. It is doing good for people using small, dark colored, Midge pattern flies. One angler was doing well with large Woolly Bugger flies.

HOBART RESERVOIR, NEV: Closed until May 1.

HOOVER WILDERNESS AREA, CALIF: Closed.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords General Store (530-694-2930) checked in and said that Chris Larson of Truckee, California caught a 6-pound, 15-ounce and a 4-pound rainbow on nightcrawlers from shore on March 8.

Alpine County will be stocking the reservoir at the end of the month.

Summit Lake (above Indian Creek Reservoir): No report.

NORTH POND, NEV. (On the Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area): A few nice bass were caught which is unusual as the water is still pretty cold.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV: According to Penny Marsh of Model Dairy, the "Fish for a Wish" derby was held last weekend with a total of 775 fishermen entered in the two day event. Mike Berry (home town unknown) won the contest with a 11.196-pound cutthroat trout (29 3/4 inches). He won $1,000 for first place plus $3,185 in the fishing pool plus a gold, silver and ruby belt buckle. Team No. 196 won the team category with a total weight of 34.704 pounds. There were a total of 252 fish weighed in. Justin Law, age 10, won the smallest fish category with a 1.15 pound Cutt (16 3/4 inches).

SACRAMENTO RIVER. CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding (800-670-4448) said:

Redding to Anderson: Flows at 4,000 C.F.S. Rainbow trout fishing has been good with 10-20 fish per day. Using spinning gear with Glo-Bugs. Fly fishing with Nymphs, PT's, and egg pattern flies. Watch for fishing to improve over the next few weeks as the bug hatches appear.

SILVER LAKE, CALIF: No report.

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero said water is clear and cold. Catching rainbow trout and a few landlocked King Salmon on the surface, using Rapala and Rebel lures. Watch as fishing improves over the next few weeks as Shad appear in large schools. Bass fishing is fair. Jones Valley and Silverthorn areas. Plastic worms, live minnows and grubs producing 1-3 pound Spotted Bass.

SPARKS MARINA (in Sparks): Was recently planted with 246, 17-inch rainbow trout.

SQUAW CREEK RESERVOIR (north of Gerlach in Washoe County): Was recently planted with 2,995 rainbows, 9.5 inches in length.

STAMPEDE RESERVOIR, CALIF: No report.

LAKE TAHOE -- North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "I had the 10 fishing trip winners from the Ormsby Sportsmen's Association with me on Sunday morning and they had a great time. All of them were able to take home one fish per angler. The largest (25 inches) was caught by Don Hettrick of Carson City. In addition, Dave Curtis of Chico, Calif. caught the largest Mackinaw of the trip when he caught a 6.5 pounder. That trout had been tagged about 10 years earlier by California Fish and Game. Fishing remains good for the Mackinaw Trout. Some of the larger Macks are going up to 8-9 pounds. I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones. We've been trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach. We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

Gene St. Denis of Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said "The Mackinaw fishing continues to be very good in front of Dollar Point and Cal-Neva Point. We've been trolling 200-280 feet deep with large, silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows. The biggest have been running up to 9 pounds."

LAKE TAHOE -- South Shore: No report.

LAKE TAHOE -- East Shore: Gene St. Denis said: "Pretty much the same as before. The fish are smaller than on the North Shore. We are catching Macks in the 2-5 pound class on the Cave Rock Shelf.

We have been trolling 180-260 feet deep with silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades and live minnows.

Jigging has also been successful with white, Crippled Herring jigs, tipped with a live minnow."

TOPAZ LAKE:

Linda Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported: "Good fishing this last weekend with lots of fishermen. Nothing really big, the largest trout were in the 18-19 inch class. The fish are a little deeper now. The best fishing has been trolling with silver flasher blades with nightcrawlers or with Rapala lures. One couple from Reno caught and released 22 trout yesterday. A 4-year-old girl with a "Barbie" pole caught some fish from shore. Tell everyone to come on out on Mondays, we only have one boat out there today."

WILDHORSE RESERVOIR NEV: Steve Epling of the Wild Horse Resort (775-758-6472) reported: "It's really nice, up here today (Monday morning). It's sunny and the temperature is 40 degrees. The ice is about 12-14 inches thick. The fishing is still good for lots of perch and for some rainbow and cuttbow trout. Most of the fishermen are jigging with white jigs and a piece of mealworm. The most productive areas are on the west and north sides of the island in front of the State Park boat ramp or by the Indian Campground. We had our annual perch fishing derby over the weekend, there were about 50 entrants and the winners were:

Saturday:

1. Louie Sanchez of Battle Mountain: 12 inches.

2.. John Shorter of Elko: 11 5/8 inches.

3. A tie: Shorter and Dennis Lynn of Elko: 11.5 inches.

Sunday:

1. A tie: Sanchez and Andy Chapman of Salt Lake City: 12 1/8 inches.
