Aarik Wilson of Fallon and Indiana University soared to second-place in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend in Fayetteville, Ark.
Wilson, a graduate of Churchill County High School and the grandson of Carson City's Grant and Nisha Kremers, set school and personal records in the triple jump when he flew 55-feet, 9 inches Saturday at the Arkansas Randal Tyson Track Center. The mark was a personal best by more than one foot.
Wilson's best jump came in the fifth and final round and put him in position to win the gold. However, USC's Allen Simms popped a lifetime best 56-7-1/2 on the last jump of the competition to pull out the victory. The jump by Sims is the fourth best in the world this year.
Wilson also placed in the long jump with a lifetime best mark of 25-10-1/4 on Friday. His long jump mark was the third best all-time at Indiana.
Wilson was a winner in both events at the Big-10 Championships.
Coupled with points from John Jefferson's second-place finish in the mile run (4:06.46), the Hoosiers tied for eighth in the NCAA men's team standings.
Wilson was a Nevada 4A state champion in the triple jump as a senior in 2001.
