RENO -- Two hundred baseball caps and shirts from the University of Nevada, Reno are on the way to the crew of the USS Nevada, a Navy ballistic missile submarine that is adopting the Wolf Pack as a mascot.

Officers of the USS Nevada contacted school officials this week asking for caps, decals and other athletic apparel for the sub and crew, UNR athletic director Chris Ault said.

"I just think this is great," Ault said Wednesday.

"In these trying and unpredictable times, it's a warm feeling to help and create a small diversion of excitement from the more serious issues that confront our submariners," he said.

The USS Nevada, commissioned in August 1986, is based at Naval Submarine Base Bangor, Wash. It has a two rotating crews, each with 170 sailors and 19 officers, and is assigned to Submarine Group 9.

"I envision our sailors walking around the boat in Nevada Wolf Pack hats and decorating parts of the boat with Wolf Pack items," Lt. Tom Kelly said in a statement released by the school.

"We'll also wear Nevada Wolf Pack T-shirts or jerseys for our intramural teams, so when we play the other boats, the Wolf Pack can kick butt!"
