Obituary: Stanley Ripple

Stanley J. Ripple, 84, a Gardnerville resident for the past six years, died May 6, 2003, of lung cancer. He was born April 15, 1919, in Paint, Pa.

He graduated from Richland High School, where he excelled in sports and was starting guard on the school's first championship basketball team.

He married Hope Marie Hobba.

He was drafted into the Army and trained as an infantryman in World War II. He served with the 43rd Division as a rifleman in the South Pacific. He was decorated for valor and heroism.

He returned to civilian life in Southern California and worked as a truck driver before joining the Los Angeles Fire Department. During his 25 years of service, he was commended for exemplary service on three occasions and nominated for the department's Medal of Valor.

He retired to Southern Oregon, where he built two homes. He enjoyed travel, fishing, golf, big-band-era music, Civil War history and nickel slot machines. After moving to Gardnerville, he became a regular at the Carson Valley Inn, where he made friends with fellow players and employees.

Among his survivors are his son, William S. of Olympia, Wash.; daughter, Susan Strong of Coleville, Calif.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

No services will be held.

Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
