Obituary: Arthur Barbettini

Arthur Barbettini, a 28-year Carson City resident died May 14, 2003, in Carson City. He was born Arturo Barbettini on March 16, 1914 to Martin and Gioconda Barbettini in Cugnasco, Switzerland. He was 89.

Mr. Barbettini came to the United States in 1937 and settled in Santa Rosa, Calif., where he worked in ranching.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific. He was not a U. S. citizen when drafted and became naturalized in New Guinea in 1943.

Upon return, he worked at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. He married Lucy Verzasconi on March 31, 1951.

He moved to South Lake Tahoe in May 1957, and become the owner of the 3 Swiss Motel. In June 1974, he retired and moved to Carson City.

Mr. Barbettini was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Swiss Pro-Ticino Club, and the Catholic Community. He loved fishing and gardening and will always be remembered for his love of his adopted country, his white jeep and his fruit trees and vegetable garden.

He was preceded in death by his wife Feb. 27, 2003 in Carson City and brother, Felice.

Among his survivors are his daughters and sons-in-law, Celine and Walter Sullivan of Carson City; Cheryl and John Thompson, of Benicia, Calif.; grandsons, Sean Sullivan and Ryan Sullivan of Carson City; brother and sister-in-law Olindo and Anna Barbettini of Guibiasco, Switzerland; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Larry Leeders, of Elk Grove, Calif., Ebe and Cleto Locarnini of Sementina, Switzerland, Teresina and Bruno Riva of Bellinzona, Switzerland, Oliva and Modesto Locarnini of Bellinzona, Bice and Frederico Turuani of Cugnasco; sisters Angelina Calzasca of Cugnasco and Lucia Gamma of Gordola, Switzerland; sister-in-law, Anne Barbettini of St. Helena, Calif.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Private family services will be held.
