Crushers play in tournament

Despite Kyle Mandoki's grand slam home run, the Carson Crushers 14-and-under age group baseball team lost 9-5 to the Vacaville (Calif.) Blue Jays Monday during the Memorial Day Tournament in Sparks.


The Crushers finished with a 1-2-1 record during the weekend tournament held at Don Mello Sports Complex.


The Crushers dropped their first game on Saturday to the Reno Titans, but came back with an 11-2 win over the Douglas Cubs on Sunday.


Sean Costella pitched four strong innings and Nick Smallman finished in the win against Douglas. Marcus Adams, Kevin Holloway, Drew Good, Zach Rispin, Ryan Pier and Costella led the offensive charge.


Pier sustained a hand injury on the last play of the game and is expected to be sidelined for at least a few weeks.E


Mandoki replaced Pier in the lineup Monday and hit his grand slam in the first inning, a shot estimated to have traveled 375 feet.


Sunday night, the Crushers played Calaveras County (Calif.) to a 9-9 seven inning tie. Louie MarKussen helped the Crushers with several fine defensive plays at first base.E


The Crushers return to action at the Fathers' Day Tournament in Reno on June 14.
