Local athletes are honored

Carson High's Lauren Costella and Owen Brolsma and Galena High's Joanna Hixon and Rachel Forbes were among the top Northern Nevada Athletes honored with the Thomas Reviglio Way To Go Awards for 2002-2003.


The awards presented by the Wolf Pack Edge go to athletes who have shown excellence in athletics, academics and community service.


Costella is a two-time national champion in swimming in the 1,500-meter freestyle and maintains a 4.0 grade point average. She has signed with Stanford and will swim this summer in the World University Games in South Korea.


Brolsma was a standout at catcher for Carson's baseball team and has signed with the University of Nevada. He carries a 3.6 G.P.A.


Hixon was a three-sport standout in volleyball, basketball and track. Hixon was recruited at the college level in all three sports and will play basketball at Montana State where there's a chance she may compete in track as well. Hixon carries a 3.22 G.P.A.


Forbes helped lead the Galena girls tennis team to the Northern zone title and had a 36-2 record this past season, advancing to the zone semifinals. She is a member of the National Honor Society.


Other athletes honored were: Cody McElroy, Manogue; Ed Cortez and Clint Stitser, McQueen; Tristan Adams, Fallon; Jana Moyer, Hug; Elizabeth Fox, Reno High.
