Congratulations to all the Nevada Day winners, participants and spectators, but especially a sincere thank-you to the folks who put in so much time and effort to make it a success.

Despite the threat of cold and snow, Saturday dawned a perfect October day for Nevada (even if it was the first day of November), with just enough warmth from the sun to make it comfortable and just enough nip in the air to remind us winter is imminent.

Richard Sorenson proved to be a gracious and deserving grand marshal, his World War II act of heroism in saving fellow members of his platoon serving as both a sober and optimistic symbol of the "Salute to Veterans" theme of the parade.

The heroes of the day were the board members of Nevada Day Inc. who put in the work to make Nevada's birthday celebration the biggest Carson City has to offer. From everything we saw, events were well-attended, enthusiastic and went off without a hitch.

The board members to thank are President Ron Bowman, Vice President Al Christianson, Secretary-Treasurer Ken Brown, Bob Robinson, Gary Derks, Kevin Ray, Linda Bowman, Gail Powell-Acosta, Lee Pisiewski, Don Langson and Ann Thomas. Charles Porschia ran the beard contest and Fred Andreason the rock-drilling.

There were, of course, dozens of volunteers throughout the three-day event, from the RSVP carnival to the folks cleaning up the chili bowls at the Carson Nugget. Even traffic moved fairly smoothly before and after the parade.

While the veterans drew deserving applause and accolades throughout the parade, the biggest hoots and hollers had to have been for the whiskers and waxes of the World Championship Beard and Moustache contestants. There may never be another procession down Carson Street like that one.

Congratulations and thanks again to the organizers. We hope you noticed all those smiles, because you put them there.
