On Wednesday, the Douglas County and Carson City sheriff's departments will be handing out gun locks at Wal-Mart in Douglas County from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Project Homesafe is a nationwide firearms safety program sponsored by the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

The foundation is funded in part by a $50 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice.

An estimated 20 million free gun locks will be distributed nationwide.

The lock is part of a "gun safety kit" that includes a safety brochure. The brochure provides an overview of safe handling and secure storage procedures and contains lock installation instructions.
