Carson homeless outreach set to close

An outreach center for Carson City's homeless will close Friday.

The Jubilee Center will close due to an inability to keep up with expenses and a lack of personnel, according to interim director Fred Wechsel.

"There are people coming out of the woodwork who are concerned and aware of the problem and dedicated to doing something," Wechsel said Wednesday. "With the proper organization they could really do something. But we've been talking right now and they are not ready to take over the expense."

Wechsel said the Winnie Lane center's expenses were hitting $1,600 a month and that it required money and an organization to keep it going.

"This has proved there is a need," Wechsel said. "That's the best part of this."

During its three years in operation, the Jubilee Center has served more than 670 homeless and mentally ill clients.

"We are grateful that this local need has been served and greatly saddened that this vital work is ending," he said.
