120 YEARS AGO
As August Lewis died, the bells of the fire engine houses began to toll. Long a victim of heart disease, he was considered one of the most practiced firemen on the coast. He was born in Rhode Island in 1826 and came to Carson in 1859. For many years he took part in local politics. A man of strong temperament, he leaves a wife and three children, two being twins a 11/2 years old. He was confined for many months, and had been in a semi-conscious condition.
100 YEARS AGO
Press Dispatch. "Can this be true?" says murderous Paiute Indians have broken out in Las Vegas Valley and three settlers have been butchered in cold blood and scalped by roaming bands.
70 YEARS AGO
Nationwide recognition for Mrs. V.M. Henderson of Carson City by the Heddon Rod Co., for the most accomplished liar, fish story. Mr. Henderson, although elated, was irritated because one of his yarns qualified.
50 YEARS AGO
Efforts to move the Lander County seat from Austin to Battle Mountain were stalled until the next Legislature, by an injunction granted by the state supreme court, "An irreconcilable conflict over 87 years."
20 YEARS AGO
Carson-Tahoe Hospital is one of the finest hospitals he's ever worked in, Tom Collier, hospital administrator told Carson-Tahoe Auxiliary members, and he said it was less expensive than national and state average. He listed two expansion programs; same-day surgery and parking.

Carson City Airport Authority has won federal approval for a $1,677,250 grant to expand the safety zone west of the main runway and other improvements, says Community Development Director Walt Sullivan.
