Steve Garvey is a class act ... when he came to Carson City last week for Western Nevada Community College's baseball, rodeo and soccer programs, he found a lot of fans. He signed autographs, posed for pictures, and encouraged everyone. The evening was a great success due to the WNCC staff and Helaine Jesse, all the people who attended and Gayle and Roger Block of Thunder Canyon, who gave each adult ticket holder a $40 certificate for dinner at the Franktown Grille ... another class act. ...

And Bryt Lewis was there. Who's he, you ask? A young man on the Carson High School baseball team you'll want to watch, who's going to give Maizie front-row seats when he becomes a professional baseball player, because he knows that that's the only way she'll ever get them. ...

And speaking of people you'll want to watch, Shelley Grupe (soon to be Shelley Robinson because she's getting married this summer), daughter of Steve Grupe, CHS football and track star of the '60s, has been named to the U.S. Olympic bobsled team ... you go, girl ... we'll all be cheering you on. ...

Barry Wynott was the lucky "winner" of breakfast with the "local lovelies" ... the amazing thing was that quite a few people bid on us ... fantastic... thank you. ...

George W. Bush says he wants to "win the hearts and minds" of the people of Iraq ... we've got great news for him ... for $87 billion, our hearts and minds can be bought, too ... we're easy ... (no remarks from the peanut gallery)

Last week "misspellitis" was in the air ... "Somebody" Costello is really Danny Costella, father to Carson City's famous swimmers, Lauren and Ryan, and leader of the apprentice welders who are helping with the C Hill flag ... and Todd Jennings is really Tod (one D) Jennings ... while Maizie became Mazzie and Mazie (she really knows how to spell her own name) ... oh well, apologies to all, and, like Avis, we'll try harder ... to get it right ... not the other way around. ...

Carolyn wants to thank Ben Grissom and Fred Stanio for the 25th invitation she's received to go hunting with them ... as in the past, she'll pass ... she has no intention of being the camp cook and bottlewasher ... and she sure as heck won't haul their deer out of the bush. ...

Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye ... there's a great cause out there that could use some help. The Carson High Performing Arts group has some students in dire need of assistance to go to the International Thespian Festival in June in Nebraska, where they have a chance to audition for college scholarships and meet other great kids. While they have raised about $200 per student, some of the students need help with the remaining $650 ... some are in one-parent families where extra money for things like this is prohibitive. So, if you have it in your heart to help them, contact Karen Chandler at the high school (CHS Performing Arts, 1111 N. Saliman Road, Carson City, NV 89702) ... break a leg ... and thanks. ...

Ahhhh, this is a trashy tale ... one of our readers asked us all to start picking up the trash around Carson City ... she says when you drive from any area into town, you see trash everywhere ... and it's not just the city's or state's responsibility ... it's ours, too. So take a plastic bag with you at all times in your car and put your junk in that ... don't hurl it out the window ... or if you see trash, pick it up ... this means you! Teenagers, adults, extraterrestrials, whomever ... clean up your act!

And whose idea was it to put the gray rocks on the east side of Highway 395 South? Ugh-ly ... if it's supposed to be "landscaping," how about a bush or tree every 10 feet? Get new glasses, 'cause beautification it's not. ...

Melissa Heller, all 6 years old of her, received a Fairy Godmother outfit ... however, while wearing it, she got into trouble and was banished to her room. Mom and Dad heard her stomping around and muttering things behind her door, so they sneaked up, cracked the door open a tad, and were just in time to hear her exclaim, "I've got a wand, and I know how to use it!" They haven't been turned into frogs yet, but we figure they're on borrowed time. ...
