CAPLES LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby of the Woodfords Station (530-694-2930) said that the lake is still iced over, but the ice is thin and the lake has some open water around the edge. In addition, they are drawing water from the lake which means that there is now a gap between the ice and the water below. He recommends not to venture out onto the ice because it is dangerous at this time of the year.

INDIAN CREEK RESERVOIR. CALIF: Dave Kirby reported it was a pretty darn good weekend, due to the fish plant on Thursday.

On Friday, two float tubers caught and released 8 fish each, while trolling worms and Power Bait.

The shore fishermen were using mostly Power Bait or inflated worms, just off the bottom.

Fly fishermen were using Woolly Bugger flies.

Spincasters were using small lures.

Summit Lake (above Indian Creek Reservoir): Dave Kirby said a couple of fly fishermen each caught 4 rainbows while float tubing with medium weight lines and Woolly Bugger flies.

JUNE LAKE LOOP AREA, CALIF: Will open April 24.

KINNEY RESERVOIR, CALIF: No report.

KNOTT CREEK RESERVOIR, NEV: Will open June 12.

LOWER KINNEY LAKE: No report.

LAHONTAN RESERVOIR, NEV:

Missy Swain at Burke's Market at Silver Springs (775-577-2750) said the reservoir has now over 225,000 acres feet of water and is still rising.

The weather last week was beautiful week and the fishing was great with lots of activity.

On Monday, Dennis and Brandon Steege of Dayton were at the Day Use Area and they caught two 3-pound Walleye, plus a stringer of White Bass. They were using an artificial minnow Kastmaster lure.

Beach No. 4 has been going strong for Walleye, Wipers and White Bass, with the largest fish last week being a 5-pound Walleye.

Beach No. 10 is producing catfish at night but be careful of the sand and don't get stuck."

In addition, Norm Budden of Carson City caught a 6.75 pound (29 inch) Walleye while trolling last week.

LEAVITT LAKE, CALIF: Will open April 24.

LIBERTY POND IN CHURCHILL COUNTY: No report.

PYRAMID LAKE, NEV:

Marty Rupert of Carson City caught a 17-pounder (16-pound, 15-ounces and 34 3/4 inches long) Lahontan cutthroat trout on Monday at "The North Nets."

He had been fly fishing in his chest waders, but when the wind came up, he switched to spincasting.

The trophy trout (the largest that he has ever caught) was taken on a "Cutthroat Pattern" lure.

Valerie at Crosby's Lodge( (775-476-0400) reported that the two largest fish of the week were Rupert's 17 pounder and an 8-pound, 12-ounce Cutt, also caught at The North Nets.

Doug Ouellette of the Gillys Sporting Goods Store in Sparks (358-6113) reported that fishing has been up and down. Good one day and slow the next.

He said that it was slow on Friday and Saturday but really picked up on Eastern Sunday.

Carla Molino of the Pyramid Lake Store (775-476-0555) said that she and George (Pyramid Lake Charters) just got back from a one-week vacation trip in Phoenix. She reported the fishing has bee spotty due to the spawn, with an occasional big fish being caught.

In addition, there was another report of a fly fisherman on Sunday at "The Nets" who caught and released 25-30 Cutts.

RAYMOND LAKE, CALIF: No report.

RANCHO SAN RAFAEL POND IN RENO: No report.

RED LAKE, CALIF: Dave Kirby reported that the lake is still iced over but the ice is very thin and water is showing around the edges. He advises not to venture out on the ice because it is dangerous at this time of the year.

ROOSEVELT-LANE LAKES, CALIF: Will open April 24.

SACRAMENTO RIVER, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero of Outdoor Adventures Sport Fishing in Redding (800-670-4448) said: "The water release is 4,000 CFS. Water level is low and clear.

Redding to Anderson: Fishing for rainbow trout is fantastic with 20-30 fish days. Water level is great for drifting.

March and April are great months to produce many nice sized rainbows.

No. 16 PT's and No. 14 & 16 May Fly Nymphs and egg patterns are working well."

SHASTA LAKE, CALIF: Kirk Portocarrero reported that he is starting to pick up a few rainbows, 1-3 pounds, trolling with Shad pattern lures.

SPARKS MARINA (in Sparks): No report.

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Mickey Daniels of Mickey's Big Mack Charters (800-877-1462) said: "We've been catching our Mackinaw trout early in the morning. I've been tagging and releasing the smaller ones. Catching mostly average size fish, with nothing super big.

I'm trolling 250-550 feet deep in the area in front of Carnelian Bay and King's Beach.

We are using silver, Herring Dodger flasher blades with live minnows or large Apex lures."

LAKE TAHOE - North Shore:

Andy Moore of Carson City reported that his party of five boat anglers were jigging at Dollar Point last Saturday. He caught two average sized Mackinaws while the remaining four fishermen got "skunked."

LAKE TAHOE - South Shore:

Doug Busey of Douglas County reported that a 28-pound and a 22-pound Mackinaw were caught last week.

LAKE TAHOE - East Shore:

Gene St. Denis of Blue Ribbon Charters and Tahoe Trophy Trout at South Lake Tahoe, Calif. (530-544-6552) said, "Cave Rock Shelf has been producing average-sized Macks at 160-240 feet. I'm using a short leader, Dodgers and live minnows.

On Sunday, St. Denis had Doug and Renee Busey, who limited out with average sized Macks.

On Monday, St. Denis had Don Quilici and Andy Moore of Carson City, who kept a total of 5 Mackinaw trout while trolling the deep water at the Cave Rock Shelf. One of Quilici's Mackinaws that was released (22 inches in length) had fresh teeth marks on its side.

TOPAZ LAKE: Chuck Fields of the Topaz Lake Marina (775-266-3550) reported that they are getting bad weather, right now (Tuesday morning). It is very windy and white-capped.

The fishing has remained good with lots of nice limits, mostly with nightcrawlers, off shore, at the north and southeast sides of the lake.

Another tagged fish ($250) was caught last week.

TRUCKEE RIVER:

Little Truckee River, Calif: Will open April 24.

Truckee River, Nev: Doug Ouellette of The Gilly Sporting Goods Store in Sparks (358-6113) reported that the river is high, fast and cold, and you need to fish along the edges.

The best areas to fish are at Lockwood, Mustang and Derby Dam. Use stream flies, small spinners or Rapala lures.

Truckee Canal, Nev: No report.

The fishing is great and the water level is almost to the top of the old dam, already.

The shore fishing is excellent with nightcrawlers for lots of Perch and rainbows.

Roy (the cook) caught three rainbows (15-19 inches) the other day, after work.

Brian (the handyman) caught a 21 inch rainbow and 12 Perch on his last fishing trip.
