Reno edges Carson boys swim

The Carson High boys swim team gave Reno High all it could handle before dropping a close decision on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center.

Without diving scores included, Reno edged Carson 143-136. The Senators carried a one-point lead into the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, and would have had a nine-point lead if it's 200 medley relay team, which would have took first, wouldn't have been disqualified.

The performance bodes well since Reno is a deeper team. Reno's depth won't be as much of a factor in the zone championships as it was in Saturday's dual meet.

Carson's girls also performed well against Reno, losing 177-108, not including the diving scores. Neither Carson's boys or girls have divers.

For Carson's boys, Kiel Costella won the 200 individual medley in two minutes, 8.51 seconds and also won the 500 free in 5:04.79. Jeff Stroup took second (5:14.41). Jake Oxoby also won the 100 butterfly (58.75) for Carson.

For Carson's girls, Rebekah Niehoff won the 200 free (2:03.13) and the 500 free. In the 500 free, Niehoff edged Lauren Metcalf as Niehoff won in 5:21.58 and Metcalf took second for the Senators in 5:22.37.

In the most exciting race of the meet, Carson's 200 medley relay team edged Reno by five-hundreths of a second, finishing in 1:46.02 to Reno 1:46.07. Emily Johnson, Katie Wandel, Jamie Engan and Hilary Schlager swam the relay for Carson. Engan also won the 200 I.M. (2:11.12) and the 100 fly (58.14).
